Why are Italians so stylish?

This is a question, as not only Editor of a magazine about Italy, but also as a Style Editor, that I get asked all the time. We have a fascination for Italians and their seemingly inbuilt style, that us mere mortals from other countries never feel we can quite live up to!

So what is it that makes Italians so stylish?

Well, I think there are a lot of factors that come into play here, but two of the mains ones are these:

Confidence and a sense of place.

“Oh, well that’s easy then!” I hear you cry! But, never fear. It might seem like an impossible thing to emulate, but trust me, you can.

If you ask an Italian where they are from, they will usually tell you the name of their village, or town, then the region and then finally say Italy. They have a real feeling of belonging to the area they were born in. A lot of them never move away, but even if they do, they still feel a real attachment to their birthplace. This gives them a true sense of place and a confidence born of knowing who they are and where they come from.

From that confidence, grows an inner confidence of knowing who they are - and that is where the alchemy starts. That is what I teach all the time in the style retreats and style days - the MOST important thing to work out if you want to find your true style and through that a self confidence that will transform your life, then you first must work out who you are and then dress for that person.

It is that simple! And honestly, it is simple. It might be emotional and take a bit of time, but it is a simple process.

Once you know that, you can then work out what looks good on you and to learn to love the clothes you wear. Then you can be brave and flirt with colour and style. Both Italian men and women don’t shy away from trying different styles and trends, whatever their age. They are also not afraid to admit that they like clothes and fashion - it isn’t a taboo subject and seen as slightly frothy, as it is in a lot of countries.

Italy is, of course, steeped in history and culture and has always been slightly irreverent when it comes to conforming. The towns and cities are not as generic as towns in the USA or UK for instance. There are small boutiques and Artisan shops, sitting quite happily next to larger brands . This is also the case in what an Italian wears. They are quite happy mixing a cheaper brand, with something luxurious, or putting a quirky item from a local artisan with something from Zara.

So, start to see style and fashion as something that can uplift you, give you confidence to show up to the world and as part of your life and your daily routine.

Also, start to think about who you, where you come from and who you always envisaged you would be.

That is the way to be as stylish as an Italian man or woman
